CRAZY WEEK!

Hi! So...things were going along SO WELL last week.  Tuesday night we excitedly weighed and took pictures of all of us in our work out clothes.  We all lost weight from our former "estimates".  I weighed 141 (down from 145) , Butch weighed 232 (down from 239), Jared weighed 109 (down from 112) and Kristen, the family Biggest Loser for the week, weighed 82 (down from 85).  We ate our very sensible dinner - chicken, veggies, salad.  We all took our turn on the Tread Climber then sat down to watch The Biggest Loser.  Nice night.  The next day...CHAOS!  Got a call from Butch after school asking me for our pediatrician's phone number.  Jared (age 10) had fallen down 2 minutes before school ended and was favoring his left arm/shoulder.  I left work and met them at the dr's office.  He determined it was his collar bone and sent us to the hospital for x-rays.  Yep!  It's broken!  Nothing to do for it except keep it in a sling and wait for it to heal.  That night while I tried to make dinner, he was crying and crying, so no work out for me that night.  He and I slept on the couch, so he could sit up and I could be there if he needed me in the night.  He finally fell asleep at 11:30 and I was up every hour checking on him.  Thursday I was a zombie at work all day.  Could not muster up any energy to cook.  So I reverted to our bi-weekly routine of ordering pizza.  I changed it up - did not order our usual, went with Round Table's Veggie Pizza with "skinny" crust.  Made a salad and hoped for the best.  Friday, Jared had his worse pain day yet.  We rushed him back to the dr and had him re-xrayed cause he was so bad.  All is fine and seems to be healing nicely.  Saturday I spent most of the day working at the Little League Sign-Ups.  No work outs (except house cleaning) for me since LAST Tuesday!  I have pictures to download on to my space.  But work has been so busy that I haven't had a chance to even do that.  I am reminded how much more work and time it takes to keep up this new healthy lifestyle.  Seems I am at the grocery store almost every day - making sure everyone has their favorite fruits and veggies and snacks.  Seems to me that healthy dinners take longer than quick ones.  No pre-packaged anything for us.  Sunday night, I just couldn't make it to the store, so we just ate whatever we could find.  Kids had Weight Watchers Smart ones and Lean Cuisine dinners from the freezer and Butch and I had scrambled eggs (half whole eggs, half just whites) on 100% whole wheat toast.  Jared is getting better every day - less and less pain, so I am hoping for a better week this week.  Tonight, we will still have our sensible dinner, hopefully work out, and watch Biggest Loser to get our motivation back!

We made it through the weekend!

Ok...The weekend was hard!  Not for me as much as for 10-year old Jared.  He is really struggling.  He definitely has "issues" with food.  Even though he has just eaten, he still "craves" the foods we have termed as "unhealthy".  I have been trying to be careful not to say DIET to him.  I have told him we are all getting healthy - making better choices and working on portion control - and exercising.  He is an active kid - got a new bike for Christmas, but we live in Northern California - and it rained almost all weekend!  So, yesterday I moved the Tread Climber from the "Warehouse work-out room" into our Living Room in the house.  I hope that helps.  8-year old Kristen is doing GREAT!  She is loving making "the right choices" and jumped on the tread climber a few times yesterday.  They went back to school today - I decided instead of fighting with them about what they didn't eat from their lunch, I would let them pack their own.  They liked it.  I had made sure there were plenty of "good choices" in the house - lots of fruit, 100 packs, dried fruit snacks, etc.  Jared even included a slice of left-over turkey ham from Sunday night's dinner.  Unfortunately, I have not made it on to the Tread Climber yet.  :-(  I set my alarm for this morning and then turned it off.  UGH!  I WILL TONIGHT!  We have not weighed yet.  We will have our "first official weigh-in" tomorrow with the Biggest Loser eposide.  I'll try and do photos at same time.  I have been happy to receive 2 friend requests today!  Thanks!  It really does give me more motivation!

First day

What a great first day!  I scoured the internet for a low-calorie dinner idea and found a new chicken recipe on kraftfood.com.  I came home with chicken, stir-fry vegetables and salad for dinner.  I also bought bran cereal, fat-free milk, fruits and some dried fruit snack mixes for the kids tho munch on.  8 year old Kristen was hungry and excited to help me get dinner ready.  She suggested a fruit salad and proceed to make it herself!  She sliced a banana, apple, tangerine and grapefruit.  It was so yummy!  She told me that she talked to my sister (her favorite aunt) and that she was going to participate in the Million Pound Match up as well!  Was a good night!

Getting Started

Hi!

The Beth Family is going to get healthy in 2008!  And this is not just a resolution, its a bonafide goal!  I guess you would say that we are not an obese family.  My husband Butch is 46 years old, is 6 ft 4" and weighs about 230 lbs.  He would like to weigh about 200.  I am 40 years old, am 5 ft 3" and weigh 145.  I would like to be at 125.  Our biggest incentive is our children.  Jared is 10 years old, about 5 ft and weighs 110.  Kristen is 8 and weighs over 80lbs.  We are mostly active, but we do not live healthy.  We don't eat fast food "regularly" but the occasional take-out pizza, drive thru when we "have to" and don't eat as many fruits and veggies as we should.  I grew up in a family with a MAJOR weight history.  I am one of 5 kids and we all grew up overweight.  My dad died at 61 with a heart attack.  My oldest sister Laura died at age 38 due to a pulmonary embolism - complication from being obese.  Butch's dad is currently having heart problems as well.  We worry about our kids health.  We see the statistics of American kids today and get so scared.
We are a baseball family.  We love the SF Giants.  Jared plays Little League, Butch coaches his team every year.  I play Co-Ed softball and this year I am going to try and coach Kristen in a girls city-league softball team.  What better time to get in shape?!
Oh!  And for added incentive...I have been asked to be a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding on May 17.  The dress is spaghetti straps and I NEVER go sleveless. UGH!
We are loyal fans of the Biggest Loser.  What better way for us to get healthy in 2008!
I will take photos of all of us this weekend and post.  Hope to hear from other families like us.
